Student overpopulation and teacher performance in the classroom

1.    Research Problem

Proposal of assessment strategies for learning in e-learning model.

·         Specify the research problem

In the educational environment, evaluation is the way to observe the students' learning and assess their level of performance. Through the evaluation, we can identify the needs of each of our students or, of a group in general, establish the achievements not achieved and make improvement plans that allow students to overcome academic difficulties that may arise, and in the same way, teachers can reconsider their teaching strategies.
After the foregoing, the problem is that many teachers carry out the evaluation with outdated strategies and that do not allow observing the different skills of the students, each teacher should integrate an evaluation strategy and a tool for each type of learning into their planning expected and at the same time cause motivation and interest in students.

·         Justify the research problem

To carry out an appropriate evaluation process for our students, it is necessary to take into account some characteristics such as:
The learning style: They are the different ways in which a person can learn or feels more comfortable to reinforce learning, it depends on the preferences, personality, culture and other personal aspects of each individual that make him perceive the information in different ways .
The teaching method: Methods used by teachers to achieve the desired learning in students, is here where the teaching and strategies are related according to the needs of the students

·         Describe the need to study it

The information that derived from the evaluative methods of the teachers towards their students somehow defines the level of learning of an individual, and this information allows the decision making to reinforce the acquired learning and the continuous improvement of the educational processes. The need for the problem of evaluation strategies lies in the fact that non-innovative and attractive evaluation methods for students reflected in the unsatisfactory results, it does not allow students to know the real learning development of the students, and therefore neither do they adapt the necessary learning strategies.

2. Reviewing the Literature

·         Assessing the value of e-learning systems

Assessing the Value of E-Learning Systems provides an extensive literature review pulling theories from the field of information systems, psychology and cognitive sciences, distance and online learning, as well as marketing and decision sciences. This book provides empirical evidence for the power of measuring value in the context of e-learning systems. Assessing the Value of E-Learning Systems offers a set of benchmarking tools, such as the Value-Satisfaction grids and LeVIS index, to help administrators of e-learning programs realize the key effective characteristics of their program. The book concludes with a "cook book" guidelines approach on how to implement the proposed theory and tools in the reader's own e-learning program.

·         Multi-dimensional students' evaluation of e-learning systems in the higher education context: An empirical investigation

There has been little research on assessment of learning management systems (LMS) within educational organizations as both a web-based learning system for e-learning and as a supportive tool for blended learning environments. This study proposes a conceptual e-learning assessment model, hexagonal e-learning assessment model (HELAM) suggesting a multi-dimensional approach for LMS evaluation via six dimensions: (1) system quality, (2) service quality, (3) content quality, (4) learner perspective, (5) instructor attitudes, and (6) supportive issues. A survey instrument based on HELAM has been developed and applied to 84 learners. This sample consists of students at both undergraduate and graduate levels who are users of a web-based learning management system, U-Link, at Brunel University, UK. The survey instrument has been tested for content validity, reliability, and criterion-based predictive validity. The analytical results strongly support the appropriateness of the proposed model in evaluating LMSs through learners’ satisfaction. The explanatory factor analysis showed that each of the six dimensions of the proposed model had a significant effect on the learners’ perceived satisfaction. Findings of this research will be valuable for both academics and practitioners of e-learning systems.

·         The influence of learning styles on learners in e-learning environments: An empirical study

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of e-learning versus those of traditional instructor-based learning, on student learning, based on student learning styles. Another goal was to determine if e-learning is more effective for those with a particular learning style. The Kolb Learning Style Inventory (LSI) measured the learning styles of students. This post-test, intact-group design examined the dependent variable of student
knowledge based on the learning style of each subject and the learning method to which each was exposed. The results revealed that for the instructor-based learning class (traditional), the learning style was irrelevant, but for the web-based learning class (e-learning), the learning style was significantly important. The results indicated that students with the Assimilator learning style (these learn best through lecture, papers and analogies) and the Converger learning style (these learn best through laboratories, field work and observations) achieved a better result with the e-learning (web-based) method.

3. Purpose for Research Problem

All Colombian children have the right to access to education, regardless of their origin, cultural beliefs or socioeconomic status. To comply with this right, the Colombian government has created policies that allow the increase in the number of students of all levels in an establishment In order to increase coverage throughout the country; it has resulted in the overpopulation of school classrooms and the increase in work done by teachers in classrooms. The quality of education in Colombia have been progressively affected due to the large number of students that teachers must attend in a class, it is difficult to attend each of them in just one hour of class, and even determine individual teaching-learning strategies. The Students have lost their motivation towards classes; the number of deserted students is growing more. Since the main purpose of the Colombian government is to provide educational quality to children, and taking into account the aforementioned, I define as the main objective of this research to analyze how student overpopulation affects teacher performance.

4. Research questions

·         Does students’ overpopulation affect the efficiency of teachers in the teaching/learning process?
·         Does the atmosphere of learning affect student's academic performance?

6. Data Analysis

Questions to teachers

All the information about teachers presented in each of the graphs is based on the interviews carried out during the month of April of the year 2020.

Graph 1

As observed in the results, 3 of them are graduates in English, 2 teachers are senior normalist, 2 are graduates in early childhood education, 2 are graduates in Spanish and 1 are graduates in natural sciences.

Graph 2

The interview was carried out with 5 teachers from the public educational sector and 5 teachers from the private educational sector, therefore the results were 5 teachers working in public educational institutions and the other five working in private educational institutions.

Graph 3

When comparing the grades in which the teachers who took the interview teach classes, we can see that 5 of them belong to high school, 3 belong to primary and only 2 to preschool education

Grahp 4

The number of students per classroom had some variations, 5.50% of the classrooms have more than 30 students, 3.30% of the classrooms have between 16 and 25 students, 2.20% have between 26 and 30 students and lastly, none of the interviewees reported having between 10 and 15 students per classroom.

Graph 5

Regarding the learning strategies used by teachers in the classroom.
we can see that 3 of them use collaborative work, 2 use motivation as the main strategy, 2 teachers prefer to make seating arrangement in the classroom, 1 used feedback as a teaching tool, 1 allowed all students to participate without anyone being left out, and 1 more carried out dynamic classes that caught the student's attention

Graph 6

Talking about the support that teachers have in the classroom through auxiliary teachers, we can see that only two teachers stated that they have auxiliaries and eight teachers say they do not have any type of collaboration from an auxiliary teacher.

Graph 7

When the teacher enters the classroom, the first thing he does is organize the classroom.
According to the interviews we can observe that, 5, 50% of teachers invest between 5 and 10 minutes of their class for order, the 3.30 of the teachers claim to spend 5 minutes of the class, and 2.20% consume more than ten minutes of class in the classroom order of class.

Graph 8

One of the most important factors is teacher training, regarding this topic we can see that 7 teachers say they have not received training for teaching and learning in overcrowded courses, two more say they receive this training every 2 or 3 months and only one person He claims to receive it every 6 months.

Graph 9

As teachers, we set clear objectives for teaching and learning, 4.40% of teachers answered that they want to provide students with active and dynamic learning, 3.30% answered motivation to learning and the other 3.30% answered significant learning.

Graph 10

Lastly, we refer to the tools provided to teachers for the development of their classes. From this question, 6 people claimed not to have these tools and 4 people say that they are provided.

7. Discussions
Education is one of the most important factors in the development of a country and provides the habitants with better opportunities for development.
Due to the new programs implemented by the Colombian country in which it is intended to guarantee education to all the boys and girls in the country, there has been a great increase in the enrollment of public and private educational institutions; however in our country the highest number of students per classroom is the public sector. After all this, it has been possible to observe many changes in the classroom environment, in the performance of students and in the performance of teachers as the capacity to serve more students has to be increased in the same amount of time and with the same tools.
With this tool research, we want to verify the effects that student overpopulation has on the performance of teaching, according to this, we can see that public schools have more students per course than private schools.
Teachers in this situation use strategies such as collaborative work, motivation, seating arrangement in the classroom, feedback, allowed all students to participate and dynamic classes that caught the student's attention. Very few educational institutions provide training to teachers for proper management of overcrowded courses, and this leads teachers to have the feeling of lack of tools to help them improve their teaching.

I consider that the main thing in education is teacher training to be able to have knowledge about the correct way to face the challenges that arise in the classroom. As teachers, we must create strategies that help us mitigate the effects of overpopulation and in some way self-prepare to reach each of our students and guide them in their learning process. Teacher training seeks to be more efficient and effective in recognizing what one has individually, wealth as attitudes that allow us to be better in everything that wed do. The possibility of reflecting on various topics that help to strengthen teacher performance can make a difference, especially when they have to face the challenges alone.

Research Project by Linda Burgos.

Low English Level in Public Schools From Colombia.
I.             IDENTIFYING A RESEARCH PROBLEM.

English is still a problem for students in Colombia. Many countries along years have been trying to improve education in order to advance and offer better opportunities to their communities, where one of the most important points is the management of a second language. Worldwide English has been considered as the third most spoken language after Mandarin and Spanish and indeed one of the biggest requirements in Colombia for getting a job or applying to college. Furthermore, all the society effort this Latin American country has been applying new strategies and tools in the last years trying to improve and get better results. Unfortunately, they have been literally poor what actually worries the whole country. The Program for international student assessment (PISA) 2015 report stated that “despite the significant achievements, inequities remain and improvements in educational quality are an urgent challenge.” (Page, 9) considering that 47% of Colombian students obtain a result that is below the international average, Colombian education is not rated as highly as the Peruvian or Mexican but is regarded as being better than El Salvador.

Specifying a Problem.
The main problem here is that students are finishing their high school, with no bases on the language, so the questions is what are teachers doing to improve students results in their English levels? Or what is the cause of all of this low result? Bearing in mind that the government has a plan, that is in action which is called “Colombia Bilingüe” a plan that started in 2014 and the objective was increasing the percent of students who reach a B1 level, the level that is supposed students must finish with. Hence that the percent has changed during the last 4 years; now for 2018 the government is looking forward to having an 8% of students who will graduate with the required level. Anyway, this is not enough if we really want to have a bilingual Country.

Justifying it.
The General Education Act 115 (1994) in Colombia, states that one of the main objectives should be acquisition of speaking, reading, and comprehension skills of a second language; and this one corresponds to English. And the government started a program whose objective is reaching a higher English level in official schools, giving students the opportunity to improve their skills at English, becoming Colombia closer to bilingualism. This program started in the year 2014 and ends this year in the 2018; and the results that the program has had is an evidence of improvement but still a very far cry from standing out in Latin America. As many researches show the average of students that have an intermediate level is a small number; and what most studies show is that according to the program students would be able to acquire a better level; and the percentage that they are waiting for this year is an 8% of students in Colombia. With this mind I would like to go deeper on the topic and find out the root of the problem, to see why students are not advancing in results with the learning of English because we all know the importance of English in our world, and we cannot continue the same every single year; on the opposite we have to give giant steps to reach the goal of a bilingual Country.

Suggesting the Need to Study It.
The need to study this problem is because we know the importance of English for everything, starting from the ICFES test, that students need to present when doing 11th grade at high school, and finishing with getting a great job, and having more opportunities in a working area. If we compare with other countries that have a higher level than ours, we can notice the big difference. For instance, when people are willing to work in companies, they prefer people who have experience in a second language, and their retribution increases considerably.

LITERATURE REVIEW.
1.     English in Colombia: An examination of policy, perceptions and influencing factors. By British council.
Abstract: this research shows a deep investigation that collect information from all the different fields in our country in order to give to know how English is working in the country. This document is an evidence of Colombia’s reality for bilingualism because they get together all the information that is interfering with the process of advancing into the correct development of the language.
Main aim: Its objective is to show the reality of our country through an investigation that reveal aspect of teachers, students, methods, methodology. They also collect data related to quantitative and qualitative information that shows the strengths and weaknesses that students and teachers are having by these days in the teaching and learning of English.

2.     The Relevance of English in Colombian Scientific Research Awarenes. By Jimy Alexander Cortés.
Abstract: Even through with the capability of prepared teachers in Colombia, it is not being enough to face students’ difficulties when learning a second language. They have limitations in their English language skills that separate them from the rest of the scientific society. Evidently, these limitations have become an obstacle in the awareness of professors’ modest, but no less important, research work. In order to carry out this study, the article has selected three remarkable higher education institutions of Pereira, Risaralda in Colombia. We used collected data from 2012 to 2015. A quantitative analysis of the number of articles in English in comparison to Spanish was done.
Main aim: All English communicative skills are desirable in the field of research to succeed in publishing. In order to reinforce this idea, Vasconcelos et al. (2008) stated that “Although a high level of proficiency in all four English skills is desirable, competence in writing is an essential component for visibility in academia” (p. 700). Their assumptions were based on a previous study executed in Brazil to evaluate English proficiency of its scientists which indicated low proficiency in writing skills founded on its national and international scientific publications; however, reading and speaking skills were even worse.

3.     Obstáculos En El Aprendizaje Del Inglés Como Lengua Extranjera En Dos Grupos De Población Bogotana. By Andrea Roldan Sánchez.
Abstract: In this research work, factors are studied and described as obstacles, emotions that in one way or another exert a greater influence on the process of learning English as a foreign language. It is a descriptive - exploratory study of transversal type carried out with a sample of 60 students between the ages of 12 and 18 and 60 adults with a range of age between 45 and 60 years old. The results that the students have not been trained to properly handle the negative emotions that arise from unpleasant experiences during the process of learning English, why which says emotions becomes an obstacle in the acquisition of the language.
Main Aim: It is expected that in upcoming research be developed strategies based on the postulates of emotional education to move Colombia forward bilingualism processes achieving greater competitiveness in the current globalized world both in the labour market and in education.

II.            PURPOSE FOR YOUR CHOSEN EDUCATIONAL PROBLEM.
English has become very important in our world today. But it is also a problem for governments that have not implemented enough programs for students and the entire population to learn how speak a second language. Our country has shown a low level in this language according to different investigations carried out by the magazine Dinero on November 5, 2019, where it states "In a rating of 1 to 100 the country obtained 48.75, compared to the best in the world that The Netherlands is 70.27. Among Latin Americans, the country is in 17th place out of 19. Bad news." It is very sad that our country being so rich and with such intelligent people, it costs us so much to learn how to speak a second language that today is essential, whether it is to increase our knowledge, to have a professional title, to obtain a better job offer or to travel abroad. Although Colombia does not have an official second language, students receive between 4 and 7 hours a week of this language. Even so, the results show that this is not enough or that both teachers and learners are failing in something. It is important to go beyond to find out what is causing this, so that the problem can be solved.
The government projects: Programa Nacional de Bilingüismo and Colombia Bilingüe stablish that one of the main objectives must be the acquisition of speaking, reading, listening and comprehension skills of a second language. The government started these projects in 2004 that aim to achieve a higher level of English in official schools, giving students the opportunity to improve their English skills, bringing Colombia closer to bilingualism. The results that the programs have had are evidence of improvement, but they still need to work on improvement to get better results. Moreover, the educational firm EF (Education First) in its ninth annual edition of its EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) indicates that "Among Latin American countries, measured by their English proficiency, Colombia is ranked 17 out of 19. " Colombians are aware of our abilities and we know that we can improve, and students could acquire a better English level. It is therefore important to discover the cause of the problem to see why students are not making progress in learning a second language. We must take giant steps to achieve the goal of a bilingual country.
In summary, it is well seen that most Latin American countries have already shown results in the development of programs that allow them to acquire a higher level in the language. Colombia already has its own programs that give students better chances of becoming bilingual. But the most important thing here is to take action on the project and help our country and ourselves to get a better English level to expand our knowledge and have better academic and work opportunities in the competitive world.

Research questions:
1.     How can acquiring a second language help the progress of our society?
2.     How does the lack of a good methodology and teaching strategies affect our society when learning a second language?

Evidence.

III. ANALYZING AND INTERPRETING THE DATA
1. As can be seen in the graph, the 11 people interviewed pointed out that it is important to know English because it gives you better job opportunities. All of them are aware of the importance that speaking English implies in the workplace. Similarly, four want to travel abroad and because of this, they consider it important to be bilingual.

2. Unfortunately, more than 50% of the surveyed people affirm that Colombia has a low level of English neither because the teachers are not well trained nor because the students lack interest in learning the language. I feel that this is a big problem that needs to be solved as soon as possible because without a doubt something is wrong with our educational system.

3. In this section, it is confirmed that the best option to learn English according to the respondents is taking private classes. How sad that the English classes offered in schools are not enough to meet the needs of students to speak a second language. However, the graph also shows that, in large part, the student is responsible for taking school classes seriously and actively, participating when having the chance.

4. Since the material according to the respondents is more or less useful for the students, the teacher must be more innovative and creative when providing work material to the students. Only one person points out that the material provided by the teacher is very useful, but 4 other people say that it is not so useful or not useful at all to learn a second language.

5. This graph shows some hope because almost half of the respondents say they are excited to learn new things taking into account the teacher's methodology. And four other people (maybe the same ones) say that they are motivated by the classes, which is spectacular. However, five other people are shy for fear of making mistakes and feeling singled out.

6. Here we see a huge problem because schools apparently do not have enough resources to teach a second language and perhaps not only affects the development of students in the English area, but in others that require technological tools and large spaces for classroom activities. The hope is that almost 20% of people enjoy having had the opportunity to learn a second language through videos, songs or other kinds of recreational activities.

7. According to the graph, sadly 10% of the respondents indicate that the teacher was always prepared for their class, and about the 48% say that sometimes or usually the teacher came to class prepared on the subject to teach. It is essential to know what is going to be taught in class, in order to ensure that students learn and take advantage of their abilities.

8. In this case, a little more than half of the public says that the explanation given by the teacher in the classroom is acceptable. It would be wonderful to be able to make all people agree with the teaching of English. How beautiful it would be if all Colombians were bilingual since their childhood to grow as people, professionals and as a country too.

9. Do you think the English class in public schools provides the right amount of theory and practice? Why?
Reading and analyzing the written responses of each respondent, unfortunately they think that teachers focus more on theory when teaching a class, rather than on practice to confirm that students have correctly understood the topic explained in class. We must be aware that theory is important, but its excess can discourage students and lead them to lose interest in learning a second language from an early age.

10. What would you like to change or modify about the English classes that you had at school?
In the last question, some people suggest better teachers, perhaps a little younger, capable of innovating with new ideas to motivate the student, focusing on the four English skills: listening, reading, speaking and grammar. Teachers need to implement materials that motivate the student to learn and adequately complete their learning process. It is wonderful when students come to class eager to learn and excited to see their English teacher.

Analysis.
As it is known, one of the main causes of getting poor grades is teachers’ methodology and the pedagogy they are using in their classes because this is not enough, and some studies show it. To achieve excellent results in this research one of the most important tools are surveys. They give a general view about the topic and it shows people’s thought through questions that the community can understand and respond by giving their point of view. Eleven people were interviewed, and they resolved the interview being as honest as possible. The survey takes into account different points of view were taken into account, such as teachers, students, parents and people from the community in general. In the previous survey the information was collected according to each question, analyzed and explained in order to understand the problem addressed and seek a timely solution.
The analysis of the results prove how low we consider is the English level inn Colombia. One example is the report delivered by Education First (EF), here hey collect information about the English skills in some countries and one of the conclusions is “A long-term strategy is needed in teacher training and in the implementation of communicative methodologies (...). We have noticed that there is a lack of exposure to linguistic and authentic English content.” States Giorgio Iemmolo, director of academic management at EF. With these results it is noticeable the effect that High school Education is having in Colombia. The way that teachers from public schools are teaching has shown that there is something wrong, this is just not a matter of blaming on teachers, and saying that everything is their fault, but we have to recognize that the educational system has failed in Colombia, as David Bish an expert in Bilingualism affirms: “I think that much more should be done in the pedagogical aspect of the teachers. As well as improving their salary conditions”.  One of the main problems that have been identified regarding the teaching of the second language is that, often, the same teachers of this subject do not know it or do not master it enough to teach it.
Another important aspect that was taken into account in the development of this activity was interviewing people to know their point of view talking about the problem. This helped me a lot to not only take into account the 11 people surveyed, but other people who surround me and can give me a point of view according to their experience as a teacher, student or parent. The qualitative research interview seeks to describe and the meanings of central themes in the life world of the subjects. The main task in interviewing is to understand the meaning of what the interviewees say. (Kvale, 1996). I like this method because it allows the face to face communication with the person that is being interviewed; this is a process in which not only answers are evaluated but also attitudes and behaviors. So, I think this is an accurate form to know people closer and to get really involved to the problem and the research.
Colombia has to continue growing in all aspects, and learning a second language will help them to have another view of things, they will want to go further more than getting just a good job because Colombia is an attractive place for tourist, but sometimes tourists do not feel like visiting because they will not be able to communicate with Colombians. For this and many other reasons it is important to consider that our country needs a good English level; but it will continue being a problem if the pedagogy to teach it does not change; studies have shown that the poor methodology makes students to feel bored about classes, and of course with no wiliness to learn; as Buddha once said, "the mind is everything. What you think you become "and therefore in accordance with that statement our mind is responsible for the actions we take. In this case, poor teaching methods have highly affected our mind and our thinking making us feel that we are not good at certain subjects, even making us go as far as the subject whereas all that is required is a different approach. And we can certainly affirm that our schools in Colombia do not have a good methodology to teach, maybe the curriculum says and wants to do many things but at the hour of implementing this in class, teachers are not able to it because of their lack of strategies. Sadly, it is what most people believe when asked about their point of view according to the level of English that we Colombians have, taking into account the classes of the schools.
